Using Ledgr

Everything you need to get your bills under control, from your first bill to sharing a household.

Getting started

The first time you open Ledgr, a short setup walks you through the basics. You can change all of it later in Settings.

  1. Choose your currency and an app colour.
  2. Add an account, such as your checking account, so paying a bill can update its balance. This step is optional.
  3. Add a few bills. Tap a suggestion like Rent or Phone to start from a template, or add your own.
  4. Say who you split with, if anyone, and optionally invite them to a shared household.
  5. Turn on the extras you want: bill reminders, iCloud sync and Face ID lock.

Tip: You don't need to create an account. Ledgr works right away, and everything stays on your device unless you turn on iCloud sync.

Finding your way around

Ledgr has five tabs:

  • Home shows what needs your attention now: overdue bills, what's due soon, and your month at a glance. If several bills are late, use Pay All Overdue to clear them at once.
  • Bills lists every bill, grouped into Overdue, Due Today, This Week and Later. Filter by tag, see archived bills, or tap Select Bills to act on several at once.
  • Calendar shows a month with a dot on each day a bill is due.
  • Money holds your accounts, budgets, expenses and income, along with what's safe to spend after bills.
  • Settings covers reminders, categories, tags, App Lock, iCloud & Sharing, backups and more. Use the search field at the top to jump to any setting.

Adding bills

Tap + on the Home or Bills tab. The quick form asks for just the basics:

  • Name, for example "Rent" or "Electricity". Ledgr suggests a category as you type.
  • Amount and due date.
  • Repeats: weekly, monthly, yearly and more. Leave it set to None for a one-off bill.
  • Pay From: the account the money comes out of, if you track accounts.
  • Autopay, if the bill pays itself.

The full bill form has more options. Find them under Advanced while adding a bill, or edit the bill later:

  • Amount Varies for bills like utilities that change every month.
  • Always the Last Day of the Month and Move Off Weekends for due dates that follow those rules.
  • Ends on a Date for bills with a fixed number of payments, and Free Trial to track when a trial ends and becomes a regular bill.
  • Grace Period so a bill isn't marked late until the grace period runs out.
  • Tags, notes, a website for paying online and a customer service phone number.
  • Debt: link a credit card or loan account, so paying the bill reduces what you owe.

Tip: To add a bill from anywhere, add the Quick Add control to Control Center or assign it to the Action button.

Paying, snoozing & skipping

Marking a bill paid records the payment, updates the account it's paid from, and moves recurring bills on to their next due date.

  • Swipe right on a bill and tap Paid, or swipe all the way across. Tap Undo if you didn't mean to.
  • Swipe left to Snooze the bill, Skip this payment, or Call the company.
  • Touch and hold a bill for more: Mark as Paid with a Different Amount…, Pause for a Month, Duplicate, Edit or Archive.
  • Tap a bill to open its details: payment history, a chart of past amounts, attachments and notes.

Attaching receipts

Open a bill and add a photo or a document from your camera, photo library or Files. Attachments stay with the bill as proof of payment.

Price changes

When a bill comes in above its usual amount, Ledgr shows how much it went up and since when, so a price rise doesn't slip by unnoticed.

Reminders

Go to Settings › Reminders, turn on Bill Reminders, and choose when you're reminded by default (on the day, 1, 2 or 3 days before, or a week before) and at what time. The same screen has Budget Alerts, Low Balance Alerts and Bills Due Today on Lock Screen. You can also set a different reminder for a single bill in its Reminder section.

If a bill goes past due, Ledgr follows up with further reminders until it's paid or skipped. You can act on reminders straight from the notification:

  • Mark as Paid records the payment without opening the app.
  • Pay Now opens the bill's payment website.
  • Snooze 1 Hour or Remind Me Tomorrow.

Tip: To keep amounts off your Lock Screen, turn on Hide Amounts in Notifications in Settings › Privacy & Security.

The calendar

The Calendar tab marks each day a bill is due, coloured by bill. Tap a day to see its bills and pay them right there.

To see a due date alongside your meetings, open the bill and tap Add to Calendar. Ledgr adds it to the Calendar app and keeps the event up to date when the bill changes.

Accounts & expenses

The Money tab is optional, but it connects your bills to your actual balances.

  • Add Account for checking, savings, credit cards and loans. Assets and debts are kept apart, and each account has a balance chart and an activity list.
  • Log Expense or log income to keep a balance current. Your recent categories are one tap away, and your last account is already selected.
  • Transfer moves money between accounts. Swipe to delete a transfer and both balances go back.
  • Safe to spend shows what's left once this month's bills are paid.

If a balance drifts from your bank's, open the account and record a balance adjustment to bring it back in line.

Budgets

On the Money tab, tap New Budget, pick a category, a period and a limit. Each budget shows what's spent, what's left and the days remaining.

  • Warn at sets the percentage at which you get a heads-up.
  • Roll Over Unused Amount carries whatever you didn't spend into the next period.

Ledgr also lets you know when spending is running ahead of the period, before you hit the limit.

Debt payoff planner

Open the Debt Payoff Planner from the Money tab to see how long your debts will take to pay off and what they'll cost in interest. Set how much Extra Each Month you can put toward them, and choose a strategy, or tap Compare Strategies to see both side by side:

  • Avalanche pays the highest interest rate first, which usually costs the least overall.
  • Snowball pays the smallest balance first, for quicker wins.

Each month every debt gets its minimum payment, and the extra goes to the next debt in line. When a debt is paid off, its minimum rolls into the next one.

Sharing a household

A household lets up to six people see and edit the same bills, payments and accounts. Everyone needs to be signed in to iCloud.

Invite someone

  1. Go to Settings › iCloud & Sharing and tap Invite with a Code.
  2. Share the short code with them.
  3. When they ask to join, tap Let In.

Join someone's household

  1. Go to Settings › iCloud & Sharing and tap Join With a Code.
  2. Enter the code you were given, then wait for them to let you in.

Once you're in, Recent Activity shows who paid or changed what. Turn on When Someone Pays a Bill to get a notification so nobody pays it twice. You can remove a member, turn off a code or leave the household from the same screen.

Just syncing your own devices? Turn on Sync Across My Devices in Settings › iCloud & Sharing. You don't need a household for that.

Splitting bills

Turn on Split This Bill when adding or editing a bill, add who you're splitting it with, and set each share, or tap Split Evenly. Under Who Pays, choose who's responsible for paying it.

In Settings › Shared Finances, Count Split Bills As lets totals include just your share instead of the full amount.

Widgets, Siri & more

Widgets

Touch and hold your Home Screen, tap Edit, then Add Widget, and search for Ledgr. The Upcoming Bills widget shows what's due next and when.

Live Activities

Bills due today can appear on your Lock Screen and in the Dynamic Island, with a button to mark each one paid. Turn on Bills Due Today on Lock Screen in Settings › Reminders. If you still don't see them, check that Live Activities are allowed for Ledgr in the iOS Settings app. They're hidden while App Lock is on.

Siri & Shortcuts

Ledgr works with Siri, Shortcuts, Spotlight and the Action button. Try saying:

  • "What's due in Ledgr?"
  • "I paid Rent in Ledgr"
  • "Open Electricity in Ledgr"

Personalise

Pick an App Color in Settings. Turn on Match App Icon to give the Home Screen icon the same colour.

Privacy & App Lock

  • App Lock in Settings › Privacy & Security requires Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode to open Ledgr. Use Require Unlock to choose how soon it locks again.
  • Hide Balances hides amounts inside the app, which is handy in public.
  • Ledgr covers its screen in the app switcher, so your finances aren't on display.

Read the privacy policy for how your data is handled.

Backups & your data

Go to Settings › Export & Import:

  • Export saves all your data to a file. Choose Encrypt to protect it with a passphrase. Keep the passphrase safe, because it can't be recovered.
  • Import & Merge adds anything missing from a backup. Nothing is deleted or duplicated.
  • Replace All Data swaps everything on this device for the backup.
  • Safety Copies are saved automatically before data is replaced or cleared, in case you change your mind.

To start over, use Settings › Reset Ledgr. You'll be offered a chance to export a backup first.
